A Bi-Cultural Approach to Indigenous Artist Development Methodology

Indigenous artists span all music genres, and their music can become a form of resistance, cultural expression, healing, and more, there are no bounds. But being a recognized Indigenous artist in Canada can have its complexities. In a country that has spent decades suppressing Indigenous languages, music, and cultural expression, Indigenous voices are just starting to gain visibility on mainstream music platforms. It’s time to create space and support Indigenous artists in claiming their place in the music industry.

Micah and Donita together offer a Two-Worlds bicultural approach to voice coaching that addresses the various challenges that are unique to the Indigenous artists experience. Indigenous artists face a very different set of circumstances in their music careers, including expressing not feeling safe or visible in mainstream situations. Whether it be spoken or unspoken barriers, it can take a lot of practice to simply take the space we deserve!

Building Artist Identity as an Indigenous artist that is authentic can be a challenging journey to navigate, we believe that making space for the complexity of individual experience is important as each artist’s journey and needs are different.

During this Master Class style workshop each participant will perform for the group and receive individual coaching support from both Micah & Donita.

Elements of Performance that are covered in this workshop include:

  • Proper warm up of Body & Voice before taking the stage.
  • Grounding techniques that identify and release tension in the body.
  • Vocal Technique for healthy Voice Production onstage
  • Techniques for overcoming Stage Fright/Performance Anxiety
  • Tips for creating freedom in Onstage Movement
  • Building a stage show that expresses your artist identity
  • Preparing and planning for showcase and festival stages.
