The Indie Artist’s Guide to Avoiding Burnout!

Ever feel like being an indie artist means you have to be your own manager, booking agent, designer, marketer… and therapist? When did this become a full-blown small business instead of just making music? It’s becoming an increasing problem: talented artists who love what they do slowly start to resent the hustle involved. And honestly? I don’t blame us. But there are ways we can be working “smarter” for sure!

No matter the industry, “wearing all the hats” isn’t a badge of honour! It’s a fast track to burnout if you don’t manage your energy, time, and focus. But don’t take the struggle personally. You’re not failing… you’re just trying to do too much without the right support.

Let’s change that!

3 Signs You’re Overwhelmed

  1. You know what you should be doing… but you’re too exhausted to do it.
  2. You’re stuck in a loop of starting multiple things and finishing none.
  3. You can’t remember the last time you felt creative or excited about your music.

Sound familiar? Yeah, you’re not alone. Let’s get you back into your creative flow.

5 Tips to Beat the Overwhelm

1. Simplify Your Focus: One Goal at a Time

Thinking about everything all at once can stress you to the point of inactivity. Instead of chasing playlists, designing merch, updating your bio, and launching a YouTube series… pick ONE project to lead with each month. Clarity of Focus = Calm.

Ask yourself: What’s the ONE thing that will move my career forward the most this week?

2. Use the “2-Hour Artist Sprint”

Set aside 2 hours, twice a week, to go fully in on your artist tasks. No distractions. No multitasking. Just focused time to move the needle. (Sometimes I get up extra early so I can have that clear, uninterrupted “desk time”!)

Tip: Pair this with a playlist that gets you in your zone. Music can fuel your creativity, your energy & your discipline. (Sometimes I just need a Latin dance party to make this all happen!)

3. Delegate What Drains You

You don’t have to do everything yourself. Whether it’s hiring a part-time social media assistant or asking a friend to help with your EPK… delegation is survival for creatives!

Not ready to hire? It’s worth considering using tools like Canva for design (like we do!) and scheduling apps like Later (a Playground favourite!) to automate your posts.

4. Create Before You Consume

Don’t start your day scrolling. Start it by creating something, even if it’s rough. A 10-minute vocal warm-up, journaling lyrics, or recording a quick melody. Your energy belongs to your art first, not the algorithm.

5. Join a Creative Support Circle

You were never meant to do this alone. Surround yourself with other artists who get it. Whether it’s a coaching group, writing circle, or online community… accountability and camaraderie can help change everything.

NOTE: Singers Playground offers group workshops that double as a creative support system. Both our Performance Master Class & the Career Mastery Sessions happen monthly! Come vibe with artists who lift you up!

Getting Better at Protecting Your Joy!

Let’s be real: this music career stuff is hard. Being indie means having the freedom to do things YOUR way, but it also means working 10x harder! The admin grind is real… and it can start to bury your creativity if you’re not careful.

As a busy coach and recording/touring artist, I have often become so exhausted trying to keep all the moving parts going that I can’t find the time for the creativity which is the very heart of the whole enterprise! When we’re overwhelmed, our artistry gets shoved to the bottom of the to-do list. To keep the burnout away, we want to try and stay connected to the part we love most. That’s why I always try and start my day with the music!
