IS IT TOO LATE FOR ME?
I hear this question all the time.
Many of my clients are “grown-ups” who worry they’re too old for the music industry. I get it! The media would have you believe that if you’re over 16, you’ve somehow missed your shot.
…but that mindset is outdated.
WHAT AGE IS “TOO OLD,” ANYWAY?
Let’s look at some real success stories:
Leonard Cohen didn’t even start his music career until he was 33. He released Hallelujah (his most iconic song) at 50.
Chris Stapleton was 37 when his debut solo album Traveler finally launched him into stardom.
Sia was 38 when Chandelier put her on the global map.
Tina Turner made her comeback at 44 with Private Dancer.
Sheryl Crow was over 30 when her breakthrough album Tuesday Night Music Club hit big.
Bill Withers wrote Ain’t No Sunshine in his 30s, proving that soul and storytelling only get better with time.
EXPERIENCE ADDS DEPTH
One of the biggest advantages of starting later is that you have more life experience to draw from.
Your storytelling is richer.
You’ve lived… which means your lyrics, melodies, and performances carry more weight.
You connect to songs differently.
When you feel the words, the audience feels them too.
You’re wiser and more grounded.
The industry can be a rollercoaster, but with age comes resilience. You know what matters.
Age doesn’t mean you should lose the spark that makes you an artist. Stay young at heart, stay hungry, and stay joyful in your music-making.
WHAT DOES SUCCESS MEAN TO YOU?
Saying “I want to make it” in music is vague.
What does success actually look like for you?
Is it signing with a label?
Winning awards?
Making a full-time living from your music?
Simply sharing your art and connecting with an audience?
Maybe there are certain scenarios you have “aged out of”, but success isn’t one-size-fits-all. Some of the happiest, most fulfilled artists aren’t household names… but they’re doing what they love, on their own terms.
There’s no one way to “make it.” The independent music movement has changed the game. You don’t need industry gatekeepers to create a meaningful career.
DON’T GIVE UP… ADJUST
The truth is, age is an asset. Your life experience, emotional depth, and resilience give you an edge that younger artists simply don’t have yet. It’s time to shift the way we think about aging in the industry and start embracing it as a strength.
No matter your age, you can have a thriving music career. Maybe that means going independent. Maybe it means redefining your goals.
But it never means giving up on your dreams.
Your passion and determination matter more than your age.
Keep going, keep creating, and know that I’m here to support you every step of the way.
